Mumbles
To access the Gower from the East you need to pass through the vibrant sea side University town of Swansea founded by the Vikings and steeped in History, with its Technology based industries and harbour that at one time was the most powerful in the world.
Continue to pass along the sea front of Swansea Bay towards the previous fishing village of Oystermouth which used to provide Oysters by the million to the rest of the UK during the 19th century.
The well preserved Oystermouth Castle looms large on its hill overlooking the sea, built around 1106 by the Normans and a small but permanent settlement grew up around it, better known as "Mumbles Village".
Since then the pretty village of Mumbles has grown and is popular by all ages for its individual shops, over 100, its restaurants, ice creameries, chip shops, cafes and pubs as well as the play parks with crazy golf and home to the local Mumbles Sailing club.
There is a promenade, beach and a Victorian pier built in 1898 which affords excellent views of Mumbles, Port Talbot and the lighthouse.
