The Towy Valley
The Towy (Tywi) rising in the Cambrian mountains, flows 68 miles through forests past the Llynbnriane reservoir, Llandovery where the river Bran joins, past the Roman Gold mines, down to Llandeilo and the Dinefwr Roman Forts and Medieaval Castle, passing Aberglasney Gardens, Dryslwyn Castle, the National Botanic Gardens of Wales rising like an underground glass elipse out of the hills, overlooked by Paxton's Tower, then joined by the River Cothi near Roman Carmarthen and then runs on past Llanstephan castle and into Carmarthen Bay at the three rivers estuary.
The river is renowned for its Sea Trout and Salmon fishing and the valley that it has carved. There are castles along its route- Dinefwr, Dryslwyn, Carmarthen, Llanstephan and down a connecting valley just outside Llandeilo at Trap, Carreg Cennen a stunning castle on rocky promontory a jewel amongst Welsh castles.
You can imagine the armies marching along the valley into the rest of Britain past the brooding castles up into England from the coast - if they were allowed.
Merlin is said to have come from Carmarthen and when you look at the hills around the town you can sense that this is the place he would have come from more than any where else in Britain, the mystery is in the bones of the landscape and in the hidden depths of this beautiful land.
